OVERVIEW
Are Your Duct Zip Ties Holding the Connection?
A flex duct that slips off its collar wastes conditioned air and fills the ceiling space with dust. Most of those failures come back to the tie: too short to wrap the duct properly, too weak to hold tension, or a standard indoor tie left in the sun on a rooftop unit.
At Shangbo we manufacture the cable ties HVAC installers and duct fabricators actually need: long heavy-duty nylon ties up to 1,530 mm, UV-stabilised black ties for outdoor units, double locking ties for vibrating equipment and 304/316 stainless steel ties for coastal and permanent installs.
Whether you are fixing flex duct to a takeoff collar, strapping an insulated jacket, tidying condenser wiring or anchoring refrigerant line sets, this page helps you pick the right HVAC zip ties by duct size, location and environment.
Factory-direct HVAC cable ties. Mix nylon, UV black, double locking and stainless ties in one order from US$5,000. Free samples are available on request โ contact our team before placing your bulk order.
THE PROBLEM
Why Standard Zip Ties Fail on Ductwork
Hardware-store zip ties are made for short indoor cable bundles, not for ductwork. These are the three failures we see most on HVAC jobs:
X Too Short & Too Weak
A 6 in duct is 479 mm around. Standard 300 mm ties cannot reach, so installers chain them together and the joint becomes the weak point.
Duct work needs long, wide straps with real tensile strength.
X Sun & Attic Heat
Natural nylon is not UV stabilised and turns brittle on rooftops.
Hot attics and plant rooms push standard ties toward their limit, so grade matters.
X Vibration Loosening
Air handlers, fans and compressors vibrate constantly.
Over time a single-pawl tie can creep loose, so double locking or stainless ties are the safer choice near moving equipment.

MOUNTING OPTIONS
Mounts & Double Locking Ties for Refrigerant Lines and Equipment
Ducts are tied; line sets, condensate pipes and control wiring also need fixing points. Pair your ties with a mount so runs stay neat along walls, ceilings and unit frames. See all cable tie mounts.
Screw & Adhesive Mounts
Fix a mount to a wall, ceiling or panel, then thread a standard tie through it. Used for line sets and control wiring.
Double Locking Ties
Two locking points hold tension on vibrating equipment such as fans, air handlers and compressors.
6 mm and 9 mm straps, 350 โ 500 N.
Stainless Steel Ties
For permanent fixing to steel supports on rooftops and in plant rooms, or where heat or salt air rule out nylon.
MATERIAL GUIDE
Nylon vs. Stainless Steel for HVAC
Most HVAC jobs use nylon. The choice comes down to where the tie sits: inside the building, in the sun, or somewhere hot, salty or permanent.
Nylon 66 โ Indoor Ductwork & Flex Duct
Nylon 66 is the standard choice for indoor duct work. It is light, quick to install and strong enough for flex duct connections in long heavy-duty sizes. The standard grade is cold-resistant to โ25 ยฐC.
UV Black PA66 โ Rooftop Units & Outdoor Runs
Black PA66 with a UV stabiliser for condensers, rooftop units and any duct or line set in sunlight. Same sizes and strengths as standard nylon. See our UV-resistant cable ties.
Stainless Steel 304 / 316 โ Coastal & Permanent Installs
Stainless steel does not rely on UV stabilisers and handles heat far better than nylon. SS 316 adds molybdenum for better resistance to salt air, so it suits coastal buildings and exposed rooftops.

LOCATION GUIDE
Indoor, Attic or Rooftop: Which Grade to Choose
Match the tie to where it is installed. Indoor duct runs, hot attics and outdoor equipment each need a different grade.
Indoor & Plant Room โ Standard PA66
For flex duct in ceilings, risers and plant rooms out of direct sunlight.
Standard nylon 66, natural or black.
Hot Attic โ Heat-Stabilised PA66
For roof spaces that get very hot in summer. Ask for our heat-stabilised grade rated to 130 ยฐC.
Rooftop & Coastal โ UV Black or Stainless
In full sun use UV black nylon. Near the sea or for permanent fixing, use 304 or 316 stainless steel cable ties.
APPLICATIONS
Where HVAC & Duct Cable Ties Are Used
These are the main places installers use HVAC zip ties, and what to specify for each.
Flex Duct to Collar
Supply and return takeoffs, boots
Ductwork zip ties secure the inner core of flexible duct over the collar or boot. Use a long heavy-duty nylon tie sized to the duct diameter, tension it firmly, and trim the tail flush.
Insulated Duct Jackets
Outer jacket and vapour barrier
After the inner core is fixed, a second tie pulls the insulation jacket over the joint. The jacket is larger, so choose one size up from the core tie.
Outdoor Condensers & Rooftop Units
Wiring, line sets, condensate lines
Anything outdoors needs UV black ties at minimum. On the coast or for permanent rooftop fixing, use 316 stainless steel ties.
Refrigerant Line Sets
Suction and liquid lines, control cable
Bundle the line set with its control cable and fix it along walls with mounts. Avoid crushing the insulation: tension until snug, not tight.
Air Handlers & Fans
Vibrating equipment
Near fans, blowers and compressors, use double locking ties so vibration cannot work them loose over time.
Large Ducts & Plenum Boxes
Ducts over 18 in
Ducts larger than about 18 in exceed the longest nylon tie. Use long stainless steel ties. For plenum spaces, ask us first: our ties are not plenum-listed.
SELECTION GUIDE
Which Duct Zip Tie Do You Need?
Use this table to match the right tie to your HVAC job. The most common mistake is using standard natural nylon outdoors, where UV black or stainless is needed.

INSTALLATION
How to Zip-Tie Flex Duct in 5 Steps
Correct installation matters as much as the right tie. These five steps prevent most flex duct connection failures.
1
Pull the inner core over the collar
Slide the inner core at least 50 mm past the collar bead so the tie sits behind the bead and cannot slip off.
2
Seal before you tie
Apply the tape or mastic your project specifies to the core and collar first. The tie holds the joint; the seal stops air leakage.
3
Tension firmly with a tool
Pull the tie tight behind the bead. A cable tie tensioning tool gives even tension on every joint and avoids tired hands on big jobs.
4
Cut tails flush
Trim the tail flush to the head so it cannot tear the insulation jacket or cut hands during service.
5
Tie the jacket, then check
Pull the insulation and vapour barrier over the joint and fix it with a second, larger tie. Check every connection before closing the ceiling.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What size zip tie do I need for flex duct?
Pick a tie whose maximum bundle diameter is larger than the duct. A 6 in (152 mm) duct needs at least a 7.6 ร 500 mm tie; a 10 in duct needs a 7.6 ร 760 mm or 9 ร 920 mm tie. Use the duct size chart on this page, and go one size up for the insulated jacket.
Are zip ties OK for securing flex duct, or do I need a clamp?
Long heavy-duty nylon ties are widely used to fix flex duct to collars and boots. Local codes and the duct maker may call for a specific tie strength, a tensioning tool or a metal clamp, so check the requirement for your project before you order.
What zip ties work best for outdoor AC units?
Use UV-stabilised black PA66 ties for condenser wiring and line sets in the sun. On the coast, or for permanent rooftop fixing, 316 stainless steel ties last longer.
Can zip ties handle attic heat?
Standard PA66 suits most attics. For hot roof spaces or near heat sources, ask for our heat-stabilised 130 ยฐC grade or use stainless steel. See our heat resistant cable ties.
Nylon or stainless steel ties for ductwork?
Nylon is the usual choice for indoor flex duct: light, fast and low cost. Choose stainless steel for outdoor, coastal or high-heat duct runs, and for ducts larger than about 18 in.
Are your cable ties plenum rated?
No. Our cable ties are not plenum-listed. Please ask us before specifying them for plenum spaces. For plenum rated cable ties and fire-rated options, see our plenum rated cable ties page.
What's the MOQ for bulk HVAC cable ties?
The minimum order value is US$5,000. You can mix nylon, UV black, double locking and stainless ties in one order. Send sizes, quantities and packing for a bulk quote.
